It&#8217;s my second time reading it. I don&#8217;t often read novels twice, but <a href=\"https:\/\/peterdaley.net\/home\/2016-reading-diary-part-3\/\"><strong>last reading diary<\/strong><\/a>, I decided to revisit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B018ER7JRC\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=tjc0b-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B018ER7JRC&amp;linkId=11d5be8e2a45d4c659afeca3894da476\"><strong><em>The Gunslinger<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, the first in the series, to refamiliarize myself with the story ahead of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Dark_Tower_(2017_film)\"><strong>upcoming film adaption<\/strong><\/a>. The first book led me to the second, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B018ER7IRI\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=tjc0b-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B018ER7IRI&amp;linkId=1b866a7aa6e914ab400d7fc0ad4b0d83\"><em><strong>The Drawing of the Three<\/strong><\/em><\/a>, and now here I am enjoying book four.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter \" src=\"http:\/\/peterdaley.net\/images\/kindle\/2016\/44dt4.jpg\" width=\"320\" height=\"381\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>October 5 Update: <\/strong>I&#8217;m at the 77% mark according to my Kindle, and I&#8217;m absolutely hooked.\u00a0<!--more-->I had forgotten that most of the book is backstory &#8211; a story within a story. Essentially, that inner prequel story is a novel in its own right entirely worthy of the upcoming\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ew.com\/article\/2016\/09\/21\/dark-tower-tv-series-stephen-king-wizard-glass\">TV series<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>based upon it. <strong>October 7 Update:<\/strong>\u00a0I finished it on the train coming back from the airport after seeing off my sister and her family. \u00a0I will rejoin the quest for the Dark Tower at a later date.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B01A4AQWRK\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=tjc0b-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B01A4AQWRK&amp;linkId=7797a1b5d22bb027cae938bee37fedef\"><strong><em>A Night Without Stars<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, the sequel to Peter F. Hamilton&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00JI4ZSJM\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=tjc0b-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B00JI4ZSJM&amp;linkId=18323a371810b477f8079ae8a933bcc5\"><em><strong>The Abyss Beyond Dreams<\/strong><\/em><\/a>, was recently released, and I&#8217;m quite eager to read it. It&#8217;s been almost two years since I read <em>The Abyss Beyond Dreams <\/em>&#8211; I finished it on November 13, 2014 according to my accurate records, so I&#8217;m reading it again to familiarize myself with the story as I&#8217;ve read a lot since and my earlier memories of the book were a little dim and merged with my memories of Hamilton&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Void_Trilogy\"><em><strong>The Void Trilogy<\/strong><\/em><\/a> which is set in the same universe and void. I didn&#8217;t intend to reread the whole thing, but after a few days of reading, I was enjoying it and saw no reason to stop.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/peterdaley.net\/images\/kindle\/2016\/45abyss.jpg\" width=\"320\" height=\"441\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I finished the above in the early hours of Sunday, October 16, and later in the morning, I began its sequel. Although the beginning of the sequel does touch upon the events of the first book, I&#8217;m glad I took the time to reread it. While the sequel is mostly set a couple of centuries later, it begins immediately after book one ends, so it was helpful beginning book 2 hours after finishing book one instead of years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>October 17 Update:<\/strong> I&#8217;m 23% through the second book, and I&#8217;m enjoying it more than the first and more than previous efforts by author Peter F. Hamilton, which I really enjoyed! I finished it in the early hours of October 23 after a gig.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter \" src=\"http:\/\/peterdaley.net\/images\/kindle\/2016\/46stars.jpg\" width=\"320\" height=\"441\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Zeo3kSO9XzE\" width=\"500\" height=\"300\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Jack Reacher is back in <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B000UZPHC6\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=tjc0b-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B000UZPHC6&amp;linkId=c111069ab738307b184627d265c9663a\">Running Blind<\/a>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>(2000). I&#8217;m flying through it &#8211; 75% completed about 30 hours after starting it. And that&#8217;s bad because I have lots of work to do. I finished it during the early hours of October 25. I didn&#8217;t see that final twist coming at all, but if I were to read it again, I&#8217;d solve the case by page 30.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter \" src=\"http:\/\/peterdaley.net\/images\/kindle\/2016\/47stars.jpg\" width=\"320\" height=\"445\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Jack Reacher is back in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B000OIZUWG\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=tjc0b-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B000OIZUWG&amp;linkId=2cd6641ac382c98afe88d5eda5e7ad6a\"><em><strong>Echo Burning<\/strong><\/em><\/a> (2001). I finished it two days later during the evening of October 27.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/peterdaley.net\/images\/kindle\/2016\/48echo.jpg\" width=\"320\" height=\"445\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Jack Reacher is back in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B000OIZSKA\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=tjc0b-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B000OIZSKA&amp;linkId=d41c6b201f189e53ba69310502d236f5\"><b><i>Without Fail<\/i><\/b>\u00a0<\/a>(2002). I finished it over coffee in the chilly evening of October 30 three days after starting it. That&#8217;s enough Jack Reacher for now as I don&#8217;t want to complete the books too quickly. They&#8217;d make for excellent plane reading if I can hold off finishing the series before my next flight.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter \" src=\"http:\/\/peterdaley.net\/images\/kindle\/2016\/49fail.jpg\" width=\"320\" height=\"445\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">A return to the past with the fifth <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Outlander_series\"><em>Outlander<\/em><\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>novel,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B000FBFMB6\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=tjc0b-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B000FBFMB6&amp;linkId=bc16738340e06430198f3e2ac89f27ab\"> <strong><em>The Fiery Cross<\/em><\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/peterdaley.net\/images\/kindle\/2016\/51outlander5.jpg\" width=\"320\" height=\"435\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">After reading parts one and two of the above, I took a quick break from times past on the evening of Sunday November 6 and read <strong>&#8220;High Heat&#8221;<\/strong>, a Jack Reacher short story which was later published in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B01MTJQFQY\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=tjc0b-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B01MTJQFQY&amp;linkId=58974a4e96601f7138dcd61521b05502\"><em><strong>No Middle Name<\/strong><\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter \" src=\"http:\/\/peterdaley.net\/images\/kindle\/2016\/50heat.jpg\" width=\"320\" height=\"446\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Incidentally, Scientologist Tom Cruise, who plays Jack Reacher in the films, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/english.yonhapnews.co.kr\/culturesports\/2016\/11\/07\/0701000000AEN20161107010300315.html\">was in town the next day promoting the second Jack Reacher film.<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>Since I started reading the books after catching the first film, I can&#8217;t help but picture Tom while reading the books.\u00a0I can live with that as I can differentiate my interest in the cult of Scientology and my distaste for Cruise&#8217;s willful ignorance and involvement from my enjoyment of films he&#8217;s in. But, well, Jack Reacher in the books is &#8230; tall. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jim_Caviezel\"><strong>Jim Caviezel<\/strong><\/a>, who played the leads in <em>Person of Interest<\/em> and<em>\u00a0<\/em>in Mel Gibson&#8217;s <em>The Passion of Christ<\/em>\u00a0better resembles the Jack Reacher of the books and would have been my first choice had I been asked (I wasn&#8217;t). But I digress; after finishing &#8220;High Heat&#8221;, I returned to <em>The Fiery Cross<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>November 15 Update:\u00a0<\/strong>According to my trusty Kindle, I&#8217;m 71% through <em>The Fiery Cross<\/em>. I did struggle in the beginning to get into it, but with the finish line in sight, it&#8217;s full steam ahead, I&#8217;ve been enjoying the book more and more as I&#8217;ve progressed through it. I finished it a few days later on the evening of November 18.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Upon finishing it, I first thought that a reading break was in order, but I glanced at the first few pages of Jeffrey Archer&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B01BSNQJIY\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=tjc0b-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B01BSNQJIY&amp;linkId=5473b0c81350974a8c0901141af5b3c2\"><strong><em>This Was A Man<\/em><\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0the seventh and final book in his Clifton Chronicles series, and was immediately drawn back into the story and its characters who after six books feel like family.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter \" src=\"http:\/\/peterdaley.net\/images\/kindle\/2016\/52clifton7.jpg\" width=\"320\" height=\"393\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>November 28 Update:\u00a0<\/strong>I&#8217;m at the 83% mark according to my Kindle. Normally, this is a book I&#8217;d devour in a few days, but I happened to start it just as I started my busiest week at work in a couple of years. I&#8217;m loving the book when I do find the time for a few pages, but I&#8217;m a little saddened that the end of this seven-book saga is just a couple of days away. And I finished it the next morning. Harry Clifton was indeed a man.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I immediately returned to Lee Child&#8217;s Jack Reacher character with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B000FBJDF2\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=tjc0b-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B000FBJDF2&amp;linkId=270c9dbe84c1f05294752957c512cd0e\"><em><strong>Persuader<\/strong><\/em><\/a>, the seventh Jack Reacher novel. I turned the last page at the gym on December 3.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter \" src=\"http:\/\/peterdaley.net\/images\/kindle\/2016\/53p.jpg\" width=\"320\" height=\"445\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Then I read four Jack Reacher short stories while I await the December 6 release of the latest book in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Expanse_(novel_series)\"><em><strong>The<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0<em><strong>Expanse<\/strong><\/em><\/a>\u00a0series, specifically &#8220;James Penney&#8217;s New Identity&#8221;, &#8220;A Guy Walks Into a Bar&#8221;, &#8220;Small Wars&#8221;, and &#8220;Not a Drill&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/peterdaley.net\/images\/kindle\/2016\/54james.jpg\" width=\"320\" height=\"446\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/peterdaley.net\/images\/kindle\/2016\/55small.jpg\" width=\"320\" height=\"446\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/peterdaley.net\/images\/kindle\/2016\/56drill.jpg\" width=\"320\" height=\"445\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">And then I bought <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B018S2773Y\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=tjc0b-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B018S2773Y&amp;linkId=24a0d62ba7d91d9f98a64d882db89601\"><em><strong>Babylon&#8217;s Ashes<\/strong><\/em><\/a> on the day of its Kindle release and immediately began reacquainting myself with <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Expanse_(novel_series)\"><strong><em>The Expanse<\/em><\/strong><\/a>&#8216;s literary universe. <strong>December 13 update:<\/strong> Slow progress due to having lots of work to do with the end of the semester fast approaching, but I am enjoying it. I finished it with a flourish on December 20 at around 11:15 pm.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter \" src=\"http:\/\/peterdaley.net\/images\/kindle\/2016\/57expanse6.jpg\" width=\"320\" height=\"429\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">After a few minutes of indecision during which I browsed a few books, I finally settled on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B000FC1MBO\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=tjc0b-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B000FC1MBO&amp;linkId=ddc2c0a1530b3095f3d842578d695e7c\"><em><strong>The Enemy<\/strong><\/em><\/a>, the next Jack Reacher book. It took me a few days to make progress due to being busy again, but once Xmas eve arrived, I took my foot off the work pedal and made serious progress, finishing it over a coffee on Christmas day.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter \" src=\"http:\/\/peterdaley.net\/images\/kindle\/2016\/58enemy.jpg\" width=\"320\" height=\"445\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I had no intention to reread the entire <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Dark_Tower_(series)\"><em><strong>Dark Tower<\/strong><\/em><\/a> series when I reread the first book earlier this year to familiarize myself with the story ahead of the upcoming movie, but it&#8217;s just such a great story, I found I couldn&#8217;t stop. I&#8217;m 48% into the fifth book, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B000FC0VEI\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=tjc0b-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B000FC0VEI&amp;linkId=6e40173f6816edda2622d6f4558f47b6\"><strong><em>Wolves of the Calla<\/em><\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0after just a few days. The race is now on to finish it before the clock strikes 2017. Angry note to Kindle developers: include a battery power indicator! Well, I could check it myself more often. One thing&#8217;s for sure, my Paper White Kindle&#8217;s battery doesn&#8217;t have the life of my previous Kindles, alas. It took me a few days to make progress due to being busy again, but once Xmas eve arrived, I took my foot off the work pedal and made serious progress, finishing it over a coffee on Christmas day.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter \" src=\"http:\/\/peterdaley.net\/images\/kindle\/2016\/58enemy.jpg\" width=\"320\" height=\"445\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I had no intention to reread the entire <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Dark_Tower_(series)\"><em><strong>Dark Tower<\/strong><\/em><\/a> series when I reread the first book earlier this year to familiarize myself with the story ahead of the upcoming movie, but it&#8217;s just such a great story, I found I couldn&#8217;t stop. I&#8217;m 48% into the fifth book, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B000FC0VEI\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=tjc0b-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B000FC0VEI&amp;linkId=6e40173f6816edda2622d6f4558f47b6\"><strong><em>Wolves of the Calla<\/em><\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0after just a few days. The race is now on to finish it before the clock strikes 2017. Succeed or fail, I will definitely revisit the remaining books at some point during 2017.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter \" src=\"http:\/\/peterdaley.net\/images\/kindle\/2017\/01dt5.jpg\" width=\"320\" height=\"381\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>December 31, 11:20 AM Update:\u00a0<\/strong>Less progress over the last couple of days due in part to my battery dying yesterday afternoon. Angry note to Kindle developers: include a battery power indicator! Well, I could check it myself more often. One thing&#8217;s for sure, my Paper White Kindle&#8217;s battery doesn&#8217;t have the life of my previous Kindles, alas.
