Title: A Repeat Offender Steals & Gambles: Universal Ballet & The Kirov Academy of Ballet
Post by: Peter Daley on January 24, 2026, 09:13:35 PM
The juicy bits aren't related to the ballet company itself, but rather who they employed:

Note: Park Bo-hi was more a number 2 in the UC - Moon's right hand man, so the title of the above article is misleading and inaccuate. But the content is related to later events:

QuotePark Bo-hi, 74, allegedly the second-ranking official of the Unification Church, has been arrested and detained by prosecutors in Seoul on charges of fraud. The church was founded by Rev. Moon Sun Myung, a controversial religious figure who has called himself the "son of God."

Mr. Park allegedly received 2 billion won ($1.7 million) from a real estate developer in December after promising the developer the rights to build an apartment complex on land in Guri, Gyeonggi province, owned by Ilhwa Corp., a food processing company owned by the church. The sum was a down payment for the sale of the land, prosecutors said. Mr. Park failed to make good on the promise, although the circumstances surrounding the contract are not fully known. Mr. Park returned only 1.3 billion won to the developer.

Aug. 2005: Save Dr. Bo Hi Pak (https://www.tparents.org/Moon-Talks/InJinMoon/InJinMoon-050800.htm) (In-Jin Moon's Letter to Members)

QuoteAs a daughter of Rev. Moon, moreover, I cannot sit quietly and watch the world belittle my father as a callous and an uncaring person. Ever since the first news break on Dr. Pak's situation, I have been bombarded with questions and looks of disbelief from numerous friends and associates who see my father as a man without principles for letting a loyal follower, a friend, and a member of the Reverend's family through marriage, sit and rot away in prison. They ask why my father cannot find it in himself to forgive and help his in-law.

They ask why millions are raised and spent on the promise of buying one's salvation with no regard for thinking beyond one's immediate family and lineage. They ridicule our church's feeding frenzy in wanting to liberate ancestors when one of our Elders is trapped in prison in need of immediate and desperate liberation.

I believe that we can raise the funds necessary to guarantee Dr. Pak's release from prison. I believe that we can accomplish our goal without burdening my father with pleas for help. Please contribute as generously as your heart dictates.

QuoteBetween 2002 and 2005, Sebold stole approximately $810,000 from her employer, the Korean Cultural and Freedom Foundation (KCFF), a nonprofit organization devoted to supporting the Universal Ballet Company, a Korean ballet company. Sebold was KCFF's treasurer and had signatory authority over its bank accounts. She used her authority to divert funds sent to KCFF into her own bank accounts, which she then used to support her gambling and day-trading habits, among other things.

After serving her sentence, Sebold soon finds herself - perhaps it was a surprise to her too - in a similar job with similar temptations:

QuoteAfter working for the Kirov, she was later hired by the Korean Cultural and Freedom Foundation, a nonprofit affiliated with the church that largely served to funnel its money and other donations to the Kirov, Little Angels and Universal Ballet.

But between 2001 and 2005, while she was working for the foundation, Ms. Kim often drove to Atlantic City to play Blackjack with its money, according to federal prosecutors in Virginia who charged her with filing a false tax return and tax evasion. The government said the investigation began because of discrepancies between the amount of money flowing through her personal accounts and what she had reported on her income tax returns.

Ms. Kim's lawyers said her efforts were not designed to benefit her personally. Rather, they argued, Ms. Kim, a devoted church member and divorced mother of three, was gambling and day trading in an effort to offset poor investments made by Ms. Moon's father, Bo Hi Pak, a church leader who ran the nonprofit and was a top aide to Rev. Moon. ...

Unification Church leaders did not appear outraged by Ms. Kim's conduct. Mr. Pak, who ran the foundation from which Ms. Kim took the money, said he believed she was acting in its interest. He and his daughter, Ms. Moon, the general director of the Universal Ballet, which relied on funding from the nonprofit, wrote the court requesting leniency. "This was a poor exercise of judgment," Ms. Moon wrote in her letter, "but I do not see her as a criminal."
